Breaking News: Where did the Smiley Face Come From?

Not specifically a Linux article but how many of you know where the Smiley Face come from? Almost all of us have used or seen one at one time or another while cruising the Internet or calling around to the various BBS that were run by basement computer hackers. But few people know who the creator of the world renown symbol of friendship and happiness was.
You may have even see the Smiley on the U.S. Postal stamp. In 1999 the U.S. Postal Service issued Smiley stamp as well. At is peak or popularity, more than 50 million Smiley buttons were sold.
The creator was Harvey Ball who designed the Smiley Face in 1963. He was paid $45.00 when he designed Smiley to boost the moral of workers in two merged insurance companies. At its peak of popularity more than 50 million Smiley buttones were sold.
Harvey was also a World War II Army veteran and awarded the Bronze Star for heroism during the Battle of Okinawa. According to the award citation, Ball continued to set up a vital communications line while under sniper fire.
Harvey Ball was 79 when he passed away on April 12, 2001, He will be sorely missed but his legacy and message of good will shall live on in everyone of us. He is survived by his wife, Winifred, three sons and a daughter. Long Live the Smiley!
